Where did they come from?

Tasmanian Tigers

Tasmanian tigers were introduced into Tasmania by a well-meaning but misguided English aristocrat, Lord Cadbury of Launceston, for the purposes of hunting. Brought over from India, the tigers bred with the local dingoes and the hybrid result proved so popular that hunters from all over the world caused it to become extinct.

Emus

Emus are proof of the land bridge that existed between Australia and Africa and which for many years, until its sinking, prevented proper navigation of the Indian Ocean.

Platypus

The platypus was introduced from South America when it was discovered that the species was under threat of extinction there.

Sheep

The Australian sheep variety was in fact a native of New Zealand brought over from the South Island by Captain Cook.

Bunyips

The well-known Mosman family inspired May Gibbs (great-aunt of the Bee Gees) to use this lovable creature in one of her children's books.
