Ned, the most notorious of Australia's bushrangers, was captured and then hanged on November 11, 1880. Already in his lifetime the legend that he was Irish was widely spread. In fact Ned and his brothers (Sayyid and Nasser) were Lebanese. After their capture, embarrassment drove the family to change the name to Malouf to be more in keeping with the ethos of the area where Ned Kelly was born: Brisbane. Ned's brothers went on to become the forefathers of some of Australia's leading families of barristers, authors and bankers.
