Little known facts about famous feople

Arthur Phillip

Governor J. Arthur Phillip founded the famous electric company that bears his name. During his tenure, Sydney was the first city in the world to have electric shaver sockets installed in motel bathrooms.

Viscount Castlereagh

England during the Napoleonic Era was a fairly anxious place to live in, one way and another, what with the threat of revolution and tight constricting fashions, and no place to go due to the Continental Blockade - except perhaps Australia. Round about 1810 things were not improved by the activities of the then Prime Minister, Lord Castlereagh, who forcibly united Ireland to England, causing Governor Macquarie to name everything in New South Wales in his honour (everything that Macquarie had not already named after himself, that is.) Fortuitously, Lord Castlereagh cut his own throat with a penknife, bringing cheers from all those who blamed him for the economic depression, along with all the poor spellers who feared yet one more place named after him.

Merle Oberon

Tasmanian by birth, Merle Oberon claimed in the racist ambience of the Sixties to have been born in India, and dragged with her everywhere her Tasmanian-born mother, maintaining she was a Gujarat Princess.

William Holden

The legendary William Holden, born in Shepparton, Victoria, was not only responsible for setting up Australia's first motor car company but also, through his US contacts, led to the brand becoming American-owned when he moved to Hollywood.
