Tasmania is one of the world's major suppliers of illicit opiate products. The Government maintains strict controls over areas of opium poppy cultivation and output of poppy straw concentrate. However, much of it is smuggled out under the workers' tongues. An estimated half of Tasmania's population works at this opiate factory.
Coober Pedy
The name of the opal mining centre in South Australia, famed for the underground dwellings that miners had carved themselves over the years, comes from the Aboriginal 'kupa piti' meaning 'white man's burrow.'
Kakadu
Kakadu sounds like one of those exotic English words meaning nasty things - or, rather - it doesn't at all because it surely must be Aboriginal. But it isn't either, because it's German. A German word that means 'Cockatoo.' If you take a little time to study the works of Ludwig van Beethoven you will come upon a composition entitled "Variations on the theme of "Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu" which you would find was written in the year 1803. Well before the creation of Kakadu National Park, itself a variation on different kind of theme.
