THE WHITLAM SACKING THE DINGO'S CHRISTMAS

1976 - The White Australia Policy Ends

In Eighteen-fifty
    The pop. was little,
The laws on migrants
    Non-committal.

With gold discovered
    The Chinese came,
And their successes
    Put Aussies to shame.

But Diggers adopted
    A rather dim view:
'They are so many,
    We are so few.'

They forced the laws
    To be re-written,
To keep out migrants
    Who weren't from Britain.

They kept this up
    For some six decades,
This tonguing of
    The barricades,

And seeing the land
    As their holy see,
Urged a Keep Australia
    White policy.

The law was cunning
    As the jungle lynx,
It didn't specify
    'No Boongs - No Chinks.'

The way it worked,
    How they got finessed,
Was by a simple
    Dictation test.

Unwanted Asians
    Were ordered to pen
Fifty words in Dutch
    Or Hungarian.

It had to be veiled,
    The point was ticklish,
Because many spoke
    Quite fluent English.

The system worked,
    In Europe reigned fear
And so many people
    Aspired to get here.

But when the dust settled
    These whites came no more,
And war refugees
    Right through the floor.

'Ah, what do we care,'
    Said Aussies all huff,
We'll have to stop it,
    There just aren't enough.'

And so in the Eighties
    With the pop. so little
The non-whites despised
    Received an acquittal.

Of course it can't last,
    One day headlines will scream:
'Let's stop all this influx,
    Keep Australia Cream!'
