1916 - So Told Me Mrs DunnThere was a dreadful battleSo told me Mrs Dunn, She had it from a neighbour Who heard it from her son. The battle was in Turkey An awful bad defeat, Lots of our boys were lost there Beating a fast retreat. 'I hate talk of these things, dear, Gives me a heavy heart, But reading last night's Daily I saw a little chart. It clearly showed the places From where escaped our boys, You could see from all the arrows That they just had no choice.' But then old Jim O'Connor Our federal MP, Sent us all a letter saying None of them tried to flee. It was just a vicious rumour, Spread by enemy spies: 'It was all a glorious battle, And our boys deserve a prize.' Then there was Mrs Angus, I met her at the shop, Her boy was blown to pieces But she didn't mind a jot. Dave died a glorious hero, Just like all the rest, The Brits they might've mucked things up But our boys did their best. They might have abandoned Lone Pine They might have stuffed the Nek, They might have messed up Suvla And their guns let go to wreck, They might have not got somewhere Might not have reached their goal, They might have lost the battle, But I know they gave their all. Then the Reverend Bill Lawton, He's known me since my birth, Told us that the British Empire Was God's Kingdom here on Earth. The Reverend added slowly, For some are none too bright, That the Anzacs are all heroes, And Britain's always right. On a poster pasted near us, Was a speech by Mr Hughes, Since Aussies are born heroes, He believes there's no excuse To shirk the Empire's battles, The Empire is our shrine, And everyone must conquer Like the Anzacs at Lone Pine. But as I say, this battle, Of which told me Mrs Dunn, Who had it from a neighbour, Who heard it from her son, This battle was in Turkey A glorious noble fight, And our boys turned into men there, And proved our nation's might.
