1946-1972 - The Snowy Man
I was going up the Snowy
With a couple of my folks,
I saw the biggest dam, mate,
That was ever built by blokes.
This dam was really deep, mate,
Deeper than the worst hangover,
Holds four quadrillion litres,
Fills the Harbour eight times over.
The waters from this dam, mate,
Drop down three thousand feet,
They stream down awesome tunnels
That are wider than a street.
And deep inside these tunnels
The water plummets in cascades,
It rushes through the mountains
To drop on these giant blades.
And the blades are under the earth, mate,
Buried four hundred metres deep,
And they spin around these turbines
That make all this current cheap.
And the water spins the blades, mate,
And fills up sixteen dams,
They use it to drench three states, mate
In times of drought and jams.
Now the men who built that dam, mate,
Spent half their life under earth,
And one of them was my dad, mate,
Right round the time of my birth.
My bloody oath, it's the truth, mate,
You didn't know that, I bet.
So next time you switch on the light, mate,
You'll be burning a bit of his sweat.
