DANCING THE MABO THE PEST POEM

2000 - Republic Bid 2000

In nineteen hundred and ninety three
Hands still tightly on the reins,
PM Keating makes a decision
To bid for the Republican Games.

After an approximate costing,
A makeshift model made to scale,
The ex-Treasurer feels certain
His heart-felt bid just cannot fail.

He offers Australians at large,
    Ultimate judges of his bid,
A seductive presentation
That now no longer need be hid.

'If your life's without rewards,
If you're living just on schemes,
Now we've something to works towards,
We'll pour concrete in our dreams.

'Now we will show the entire world,
We'll become one big powerhouse and
Standing up on our own free feet
    Hold the Republican Games 2000!

'We'll turn the whole of Australia
    Into one humungous stadium,
For our Republican regalia
Will run for a whole millennium.

'We'll wrestle with our identity
    And fence with iconoclastics,
We'll have synchronised flag-waving
    And political gymnastics.

'We'll leap Presidential hurdles
    And pole-vault across the throne,
We'll run around in Asian circles
And bravely dive through the unknown.'
