1954 - The Petrov Affair

(In the background of the royal visit was the looming danger of the Cold War.)

Sometime in Feb of Fifty-four
A Russian loses esprit de corps.

Has secret files, feels overchecked,
Contacts Aussies, wants to defect.

When PM Menzies hears of scheme,
Asks spy Petrov to hold his steam.

'The time's not ripe,' he tells the man.
For Bob has his own five-year plan.

Shrewd was Menzies, wise, hilarious,
A typically loudmouth Sagittarius.

Stalin was one, so was Franco,
And probably the ghost of Banquo.

Give them power and there's no reprieve,
Once they're in, they never leave.

Brezhnev was one too and so was Mao,
Once they're in, they can't say ciao.

And to keep power they are ready
To get involved in anything shady.

And as they're ruled by Jupiter
They'll snoop and sneak and monitor.

Yet Bob did his machination
For the sake of this wacky nation.

For should Evatt run Canberra
It'll be nothing but Red Terror.

And as it seemed that Evatt might win
The PM swore to bring him ruin.

Here comes April, Menzies hell bent,
Makes a stagy speech in Parliament.

'We've got a spy who's spilled the beans:
Reds want power by any means!

'They've infiltrated Labor's lair,
There are Reds under beds everywhere!'

Evatt laughs it off as trivia,
Underestimates hysteria.

Petrov decamps, Russia blows fuse,
The world reacts with headline news.

KGB crossed, nabs wife Petrova,
But lose her in Darwin stopover.

Insults are swapped, Embassies close,
Names and faces the Petrovs expose.

The McCarthy era is in full swing,
People believe almost anything.

For lo and behold on the Petrovs' list,
Many a Labor activist!

What shock to read in the Petrovgraph,
The names of men on Evatt's staff!

How upsetting! What disrepair!
The Red, it seems, ARE everywhere.

So Doc Evatt may be a real good bloke,
But he doesn't even get to stroke.

Menzies wins, Evatt bats zero,
Petrov the traitor becomes the hero.

No one will the patriot believe,
They go for the lies the ratbags weave.

Menzies convenes a Royal Commission:
Labor meltdown, Party fission.
