1830 - John Macarthur - Home On The Sheep's Back
Young lieutenant joins the Corps,
Arrives in Sydney, stands at the fore,
Hates our wasteland penitential,
In wool growth sees our great potential.
Seizes land, acts like a bully,
Ships from the Cape some Merinos woolly,
Spanish rams crossed with Bengal ewes -
'For sheep as meat I've got no use.'
Domineering, loud and cruel,
Wounds his commander in a duel.
Sent back to England for his excesses,
His fine wool there everyone impresses.
Returns to Sydney undeterred,
Brings more sheep from George the Third.
Mocks Bligh's daughter before the gents,
Bligh retorts, pulls down his fence.
Next thing Macarthur will not pay
Fine for a convict stowaway.
Bligh taunts Mac with ten of the best,
While Mac initiates Bligh's arrest.
Sent to England for his rebellion
Our rugged hero proves Machiavellian.
Publicises his ovine fold,
His wool wins honours, he wins gold.
