1835 - John BatmanJohn Batman wished to buy some landAnd took along his riches, A shirt, a knife, a tomahawk A handkerchief with stitches, A looking glass without a frame A few discarded blankets, A bag of flour and hundred pounds Of most attractive trinkets. John Batman sailed to Phillip Bay Upon his chartered schooner, And when he saw the splendid place He wished he had come sooner. He went to see the countryside, The Bellarine and Corio, And exclaimed in great excitement 'If there's a seller I'm a buyer!' John Batman looked round for a chief, And frankly told the locals, 'I want to meet the folks in charge And not you silly yokels." He searched around for days on end, With grit from playing rugger, And didn't stop till he came across The brothers Jagajaga. John Batman bowed very deep, For he could be such a sweetie, And showed the Jagajaga chiefs A most advantageous treaty. He explained in general terms That he had devised a charter, And was prepared to buy the bay By most equitable barter. John Batman was a man of faith, Who wished to make things legal, For he was rather keen to avoid Any unpleasant sequel. He asked the chiefs to take a knife, So that no one will misquote 'em, And carve in bark most faithfully The stamp of their tribal totem. John Batman then copied their mark Upon the simple contract, And at once became the owner Of the world's finest land tract. It was only later he learnt Of his most grievous error, For he had unknowingly bought Also Melbourne and the Yarra.
