1915 - Gallipoli
World War One,
Turkish front,
Aussie troops must
Bear the brunt.
Landing missed,
Wrong cliff climbed,
Birdwood's plans
Are badly timed.
Allies err,
Don't fight at once,
Turks bluff all
With their fake guns.
At Anzac Cove,
Ground is held,
Trenches dug,
Turks repelled.
Three weeks later,
Huge assault,
Combat close,
But no result.
Next at Nek,
Then Lone Pine,
Three more thousand
Find their shrine.
Eight months long
Aussies tossed,
Gallipoli
Ends up lost.
Back at home,
Big hopes thwarted,
The deaths, the deeds
Become distorted.
Politicians
Of all description
Fight on the issue
Of conscription.
Mannix and
The Left deplore
Our involvement
In the war.
Hughes with savagery
And galumph,
Argues that defeat
Was a triumph.
Australian politics
Becomes unstable,
Gallipoli becomes
A fable.
