1954 - When The Face On The Money Was Here

Don't you wish you'd been around
In nineteen hundred and fifty-four
When a mystical experience
Drifted over the Australian shore?
Menzies thought he'd teach the lefties
A pretty basic thing or two,
And imported straight from London
The freshly throned young QE2.
From Fremantle to Bundaberg
Australia stood for weeks in queues,
Millions filed the streets in lines,
And this before they'd port-a-loos.
All the papers published brochures,
Everyone bought a souvenir,
A sudden thrill ran through the nation:
The pretty face on the money was here!
Royalty now strolled among us
The Queen and Prince within our sight,
It was real, it was stunning,
The biggest thing since Vegemite!
