1788 - Australia DayHere is a point most pertinent:How does one claim a continent? It's an aspect that's most vital This imperial trick of claiming title. Phillip certainly was au fait And thought he'd pick Australia Day. At dawn he bid some ground be cleared Of vegetation he found weird. The lads picked out a likely tree, Chopped off its grandeur at the knee. Then stuck it right back in the earth In readiness for the Nation's birth. Packing a play-lunch modest but hearty Phillip threw a flagpole party. The sky was blue, the weather steamy The haze on the Cove all sort of dreamy. No sign of storms, or rain, or thunder - The perfect day for a little plunder. Legs unsteady but with esprit The small group landed at Circular Quay. They drank a toast, played a drum roll And hoisted Jacky up the pole. They played some cricket, then some poker Though Phillip's game was mediocre. They drank more toasts, played some bugle And consumed their picnic frugal. Then out of earshot up the beach, Phillip made a laconic speech: 'Testing, testing, one two three I claim this spot for King and me. 'Testing, testing, four five six Watch out for those blacks with sticks. 'Testing, testing, eight nine ten, I think I might do this again.'
