Stop Being Interesting

Before waking up so suddenly in this new world, I always thought of myself as an average conversationalist. It came as a shock to discover that, in fact, I was an "interesting" person.

On hearing my views and opinions, which to me sounded rather ordinary, the people I met would look up with astonishment and mutter:
  "That's very interesting."
  "Really?"
  "Mmmm."

One day I ran into another little Confused Uninitiated Newcomer Tourist like myself, who described an almost identical bewilderment. Likewise, it had been bothering him for a while.
"Do you find me fascinating?" he began.
  "Not particularly."
"Just as I thought. Yet I am always told by everyone that what I have to say is fascinating."
"What an amazing coincidence!" I exclaimed. "People are just as riveted by my own conversation!"

We took a long hard look at one another. Could it be that we were smarter than either of us thought?
"It does look like it, doesn't it?"

It was only after some deep soul-searching and several litres of coffee that we arrived at the truth of the code we had encountered. It appeared to us that people in this land are deemed "interesting" when what they have to say is of absolutely no interest to anyone, and that the moment views, aspirations or beliefs are considered to be "fascinating", it is best to switch the conversation to the weather.
