The Bedroom

A poet once called the eyes "the mirrors of the soul". Evidently he wasn't Australian. Australians learn very early in life from their parents that the real mirror of the soul is the state of one's bedroom.

They learn that the more unused and deserted a bedroom appears, the better impression its owners will make on the world. The bedrooms admired the most, in fact, are those which look as if their occupants slept elsewhere.

To create an environment, therefore, where your partner or occasional visitor will feel comfortable, you must put all your old-fashioned notions of decor aside and take as your inspiration - the motel room.

  Go for the unlived-in look.

  Keep everything out of sight.

A bedroom should never be tainted by the identity of those inhabiting it. This is a courteous society and it is bad manners to have a personality of one's own.

Things private must be safely stowed away. It's best to give bedrooms a rigid and uninviting appearance. Eradicate any hint of their real purpose.

Make sure beds are all made up by six-thirty am to discourage those who might want to use them again.
