Putting Australians At Ease

Asians never really feel at ease until they've been allowed to talk about their family and background. Mediterranean people like to be touched on the arms or hands in order to feel at home with you. Assuring them that they are the most sensitive and sentimental beings you've ever met, will relax Slavonic people just nicely.

So what relaxes an Australian? What puts them most at ease?

For one, letting them stand by the front door, hand on the door handle, with the security of being able to leave whenever they wish. Suddenly, they become talkative. Of course, this is the time to extract that vital information you've been dying to find out all night.

When inside your home, do not insist on getting visitors to sit down. They're much more likely to stay longer if they can stand up, lean against a doorpost, or sit on the edge of a table, twisted into an uncomfortable knot. You'll see how much friendlier they are this way, how much more they'll trust you and take you into their confidence.

Be as friendly as you like on the blower, as everyone does like a good disembodied, impersonal telephone conversation. But when meeting the same person face to face later, be sure to act really stitched up. In fact, you will achieve far more if you just turn away and pretend that you are still talking on the phone to each other.
